John Fraser (botanist)
John Fraser (* 1750 in the county of Inverness-shire , † May 3, 1811 in Chelsea (London) ) was a Scottish tree nursery schoolboy. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Fraser ".
Live and act
He was baptized in Kiltarlity Church on October 14, 1750 . The entry in the church book states Donald Fraser of Tomnacross , had a child baptized named John, witnessed by the congregation. On behalf of the Russian Tsarina Catherine the Great , he collected plants. When he returned to civilization, Russia had a new tsar who did not want to hear about the commission.
Fraser was a nursery nurse in Chelsea. He introduced North American plants, which he collected in America from 1785 to 1796. During this period he got to know Thomas Walter and befriended him.
Honors
The Fraser fir ( Abies fraseri ) and the mountain magnolia ( Magnolia fraseri ) as well as the genus Frasera Walter from the gentian family (Gentianaceae) were named after him.
