John Galt (born May 2, 1779 in Irvine , † April 11, 1839 in Greenock ) was a Scottish writer . In several books and articles he used the pseudonyms Rev. T. Clark , Robin Goodfellow , Thomas Duffle and Capt. Samuel Prior .

Life

Galt's father was a naval captain . The family moved to Greenock in 1789 , where he received his schooling and later wrote his first essays for local magazines. In 1804 Galt went to London , where he studied law from 1809 (after trying unsuccessfully as a businessman). He traveled a lot and was u. a. with Lord Byron friend, whom he first in Gibraltar had met.

He lived in Canada from 1824 to 1829 , where he founded the Canada Company . However, after a dispute with Governor Peregrine Maitland , he was imprisoned and moved back to Greenock, Scotland in 1833, where he died in 1839.

Since returning from Canada, Galt has made a living almost exclusively from book publications, which explains the astonishing quantity of his publications. During his final years in Scotland, Galt suffered from the effects of several strokes, which left him physically paralyzed and very limited. Galt was married to Elizabeth Tilloch, daughter of the Scottish journalist Alexander Tilloch (1759-1825), since 1814; the marriage produced three sons.

He is, along with Walter Scott , one of the most important Scottish novelists of the first half of the 19th century.
