John Gardner (legal philosopher)

John Gardner (born March 23, 1965 - July 11, 2019 ) was a British legal philosopher. From 2000 to 2019 he was Professor of Legal Philosophy (Jurisprudence) at Oxford University and Fellow at University College, Oxford .

Gardner grew up in Glasgow and studied law in Oxford at New College . In 1995 he obtained his doctorate with the degree of D.Phil. From 1991 to 1996 he was a visiting lecturer in the Law School of Oxford University; from 1996 to 2000 he taught at King's College London .

Gardner was visiting professor at Columbia Law School (2000), Yale University (Georges Lurcy Visiting Professorship 2002–03, 2005) and the Law School of the University of Texas at Austin (2006).

He published in the field of legal philosophy and theory , ethics and the philosophical foundations of tort law and criminal law and was co-editor of various journals. Although his work received attention in the English-speaking area, only one article in German had been published by 2011.
