John Gilmore (musician)
John Gilmore (born September 28, 1931 in Summit , Mississippi , † August 19, 1995 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania ) was an American jazz saxophonist and clarinetist.
Gilmore began playing the clarinet at the age of fourteen, studied at Du Sable High School, and performed as a clarinetist and saxophonist while serving in the US Air Force from 1948 to 1951. In 1952 he worked with Earl Hines before becoming a member of the Quartet and later of the Arkestra of Sun Ra in 1953 , to which he belonged for four decades until his death in 1993 and which he then directed until his own death.
He also performed with musicians such as Dinah Washington , Clifford Jordan , Freddie Hubbard , Elmo Hope , McCoy Tyner , Paul Bley , Andrew Hill , Pete LaRoca and Chick Corea and was a member of Art Blakeys Jazz Messengers from 1964 to 1965 . He worked on more than 130 albums, mostly with the Sun Ras Band. Gilmore's playful possibilities to achieve impressive effects made him a pioneer of the new sound in jazz even before the era of free jazz.
