John Godber

John Harry Godber OBE (born May 18, 1956 in Upton , West Yorkshire ) is a British playwright and director .

Life

After attending school, the son of a miner studied at the University of Leeds and then worked as a teacher between 1979 and 1983 . In addition to his work as artistic director of the HullTruckTheatreCompany, which he began in 1984 , Godber began his literary career and wrote over 30 plays and scripts for television and radio .

His best-known works include Up'n'under (1984), which won the Laurence Olivier Award and was filmed in 1997 , Bouncers (1986), Teechers (1987), Lucky Sods (1995) and Thick as a Brick (1999). In 2001 he accepted a professorship in drama at the University of Hull and subsequently became professor of popular theater at Liverpool Hope University in 2004 .

After William Shakespeare and Alan Ayckbourn, Godber is considered the most acted playwright in Great Britain and ended his collaboration with the HullTruckTheatreCompany in 2010 after 26 years. He then announced his collaboration with the Wakefield Theater Royal in March 2011.
