John Hanna (lawyer)

John Alford Hanna (born March 30, 1891 in Salem , Nebraska ; died August 26, 1964 in Falmouth , Massachusetts ) was an American law scholar, college professor at Columbia University, and government adviser.

Life

John Hanna began his education at Dartmouth College , receiving an MA from Stanford University in 1915 and an LL.B. in 1918. at Harvard University . He did a legal internship with the Attorney General of the United States in 1919 and then worked for eight years as a lawyer in Auburn, Nebraska . He also served as legal advisor to War Finance Corporation between 1921 and 1927 .

Hanna received a professorship at the Law School of Columbia University in 1931 . In addition to his university teaching, he was involved in various consulting projects. Between 1931 and 1933 he led a research project on the financial structures in the US agricultural sector. He served at times as legal advisor to the Farm Credit Administration and helped draft the Uniform Agricultural Cooperative Association Law. From 1952 to 1956 he was an advisor to the New York Law Revision Commission and in 1954 an advisor on antitrust laws to the Attorney General. Hanna was a member of the bar in the states of Massachusetts, Nebraska, District of Columbia, and the Supreme Court.

Among other things, Hanna published the book Cases in Corporate Reorganization and was co-author and co-editor of the American Individual Enterprise System , Creditor's Rights and Security . Hanna was a diligent letter writer to the New York Herald Tribune .

Hanna was married to the emigrated German journalist Irene Mermet (1892–1956), who was born in Aachen and they had four children. The cyberneticist Valentin Braitenberg was a son-in-law. He lived in New York City and had a summer retreat in Falmouth.
