John Haverfield

John Haverfield (* 1744 in Kew Gardens ; † 1820 ) was an English gardener and landscape architect .

Life

The son of John Haverfield the Elder, chief gardener of the Royal Gardens at Richmond and Kew , he was also trained as a gardener.

Among other things, he worked on the expansion of the Kew Gardens under the king's mother Augusta von Sachsen-Gotha-Altenburg . In 1769 he met her nephew there, the same age Ernst II of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg , who took him to Gotha . There he laid out a garden near the castle based on the ideas of the famous English garden designer Lancelot Capability Browns , who is considered to be one of the first English landscape gardens on the continent.

Haverfield later took over his father's position at Kew Gardens. In addition, worked on other garden projects and played a key role in the construction of Abbey House in Wolsingham , Norfolk from 1806-1816 .
