John Howard Payne

John Howard Payne (born June 9, 1791 in New York City , † April 10, 1852 in Tunis ) was an American playwright and actor. He was one of the first American writers to be noted in Europe. On the theater stage he was a kind of child prodigy as a teenage hero , but he became known for the long term for the song Home, Sweet Home , which was sung a lot during the American Civil War . The music for this came from Henry Bishop .

Life

Payne began writing as a theater critic for newspapers in Boston at the age of 11 , then published the magazines Thespian Mirror (1805/06) and The Pastime (1807/08) in New York . In 1809 he made his acting debut at the Park Theater in New York. In 1813 he went to Europe. He wrote or adapted plays for London theaters and worked as their agent in Paris, where he worked intermittently with Washington Irving .

In 1832 he returned to New York. From 1842 to 1845 and from 1851 to 1852 he was the American consul in Tunis.

A list of his plays published by Gabriel Harrison in 1885 in his biography Paynes included 61 works: 11 tragedies, 9 comedies, 26 dramas (melodramas), 7 operas and 10 farces. In 1940, 11 more pieces from a manuscript collection were published.
