John Briquet

John Isaac Briquet (born March 13, 1870 in Geneva , † October 26, 1931 there ) was a Swiss botanist. Its official botanical author abbreviation is “ Briq. ".

Life

Briquet was the son of a paper merchant and studied science in Geneva and Berlin. In 1891 he received his doctorate under Johann Müller ( Johannes Müller Argoviensis , 1828-1896) in Geneva and from 1896 he was curator at the Botanical Garden and the Botanical Collection in Geneva and its director from 1906 until his death.

He dealt with the flora of Corsica, North Africa and the Maritime Alps and the systematics of flowering plants, especially mint plants . He dealt particularly with the genus hollow tooth (Galeopsis), about which he published a monograph in 1893. He also dealt with the history of botany in Switzerland and wrote biographies of botanists. In his time he was a leader in international efforts to establish a uniform plant nomenclature and was the successor of his teacher Alphonse Pyrame de Candolle in this area .

From 1912 to 1921 he was director of the Swiss Botanical Society. In 1914 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .

Honors

Briquet received an honorary doctorate from Cambridge in 1930 . He was a Knight of the Legion of Honor . A genus Briquetia Hochr is named after him . of the family Malvaceae (Malvaceae), Briquetastrum Robyns & Lebrun of the family Labiatae (Lamiaceae) and Briquetina J.F.Macbr. from the family Icacinaceae .
