John Jakopin (born May 16, 1975 in Toronto , Ontario ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player . During his career he played for the Florida Panthers , Pittsburgh Penguins and San Jose Sharks in the National Hockey League .

Career

Jakopin first played four years from 1993 to 1997 at Merrimack College in the leagues of the National Collegiate Athletic Association , before he played three games for the Adirondack Red Wings in the American Hockey League during the 1996/97 season . These were the farm team of the Detroit Red Wings who had selected him in the fourth round of the 1993 NHL Entry Draft in 97th position.

For the 1997/98 season he was then signed by the Florida Panthers from the NHL, for which he played 82 games by the end of the 2000/01 season. Mainly he played during his time with the Panthers on their farm teams, Beast of New Haven and Louisville Panthers , in the AHL. There he received the Yanick Dupré Memorial Award for the most socially committed player in the entire league in his first season in 1997/98 . He missed large parts of the 1999/00 season due to a groin injury.

In October 2001 Jakopin moved to the Pittsburgh Penguins , who had selected him from the waiver list. There he ran for both the NHL team and their AHL farm team, the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins . After only one year in Pittsburgh, the Canadian signed a one-year contract as a free agent with the San Jose Sharks in the summer of 2002 , where he was again out for a long time due to a concussion . When the contract expired in the summer of 2003, the defender signed with the New York Rangers . For this, however, he never played an NHL game, but only played for the Hartford Wolf Pack in the AHL. In March 2004 this loaned him to the league rivals Binghamton Senators until the end of the season .

Jakopin changed after the disappointing season after Slovenia for HDD Olimpija Ljubljana . There he ended his career in December 2004 after the fifth concussion.
