John Jordan Crittenden III

John Jordan Crittenden III ( June 5, 1854 , † June 25, 1876 at Little Big Horn , in present-day Montana ) was an officer in the United States Army and member of the Crittenden family, which in the 19th century were several leading politicians and military officials brought forth.

Life

He began his training at the United States Military Academy in 1873 but failed to graduate. In 1875 he left the academy. He petitioned General Ulysses S. Grant and was made a second lieutenant in the 20th US Infantry in 1875 . He served in a cavalry unit (7th Cavalry) under Lieutenant James Calhoun . He then served under Major General George Armstrong Custer and took part with this in the campaign against the Indians. Together with him he fell in the battle of Little Bighorn . He was buried with his comrades on Calhoun Hill . The body was later exhumed and buried in Custer National Cemetery near the battlefield in 1931 .
