John Kay (2012)

John Anderson Kay (born August 3, 1948 in Edinburgh ) is a British economist.

Life

John Kay attended the Royal High School in Edinburgh . He studied economics at the University of Edinburgh and Nuffield College and was a tutor in economics and a fellow at Oxford University from 1971 to 1978 .

Kay became a staff member and then director of the Institute for Fiscal Studies in 1979, succeeding Dick Taverne . In 1986 he founded the consulting firm London Economics and taught at the London Business School . In 1997 he became director of the newly established Saïd Business School , but stepped down in 1999. Kay is visiting professor at the London School of Economics . Kay is networked several times, for example with the Think Tanks Policy Network , the Institute for New Economic Thinking and Re-Define .

Kay writes popular science books on current economic problems and has a regular column in the Financial Times . In 2015 he put forward the thesis that the financial industry has only been concerned with itself for 40 years and has contributed nothing to the functioning of the real economy.

Honors

Kay has been Commander of the Order of the British Empire since 2014 . Since 2010 Honorary Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Taxation , since 2009 Honorary Fellow of the CFA Society of the United Kingdom , since 2008 Honorary Doctor of Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh and Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh . In 1999 he became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and in 1997 a Fellow of the British Academy .

Kay also received various awards, including the Viipuri Prize from Lappeenranta University of Technology in 2012 and the “Advocacy Award for Responsible Capitalism” from FIRST Magazine (Forum For Decision Makers) in 2013 .
