John Kerr Tiffany ( February 9, 1842 - March 3, 1897 ) from St. Louis , Missouri , was an early American philatelist .

Philatelic literature

During his student days in France he began collecting postage stamps and made the decision to collect "every printed work from the field of philately". With this in mind, he built what is perhaps the largest philatelic library of this era. In 1874, based on his collection of books and other material that did not belong to him, he published The Philatelical Library: A Catalog of Stamp Publications ( The Philatelic Library: A Catalog of Stamp Publications ). He continued his cataloging of philatelic literature and published the book The Stamp Collector's Library Companion (Part 1) in 1889 , with an addition in 1890. When Tiffany died in 1897, his philatelic library was the largest in the world and was acquired intact by James L. Lindsay, Earl of Crawford . Lindsay, in turn, bequeathed his collection to the British Museum .

He built up a specialized stamp collection, focusing on the United States and British North America collecting areas . Since he lived in the St. Louis, Missouri area, he studied the St. Louis Postmaster Provisionals and performed a post- field determination. With the limited number of specimens at his disposal, this determination was difficult, but it later turned out to be accurate when more pieces of it became known. Based on his findings, he wrote a monograph in 1894 entitled A St. Louis Symposium .

Tiffany published the first comprehensive handbook on United States postage stamps, entitled Les Timbres des Etats-Unis d'Amerique . It was printed in three parts around 1883 and was later published in an expanded version as the History of the Postage Stamps of the United States of America .

Philatelic activities

Tiffany was the first president of the American Philatelic Association, founded in 1886 (now the American Philatelic Society ). He held this office until 1896.

Library

Tiffany's philatelic library merged with Crawford Library and is now part of the British Library's philatelic collection .

Awards

Tiffany was inducted into the American Philatelic Society Hall of Fame in 1941 .
