John Knowles

John Knowles (born September 16, 1926 in Fairmont , West Virginia , † November 29, 2001 in Fort Lauderdale , Florida , USA ) was an American author. He became known for his novel Another Peace .

life and career

John Knowles grew up in a wealthy family. He went to the prestigious Phillips Exeter Academy when he was 15 . In 1945 he did his military service and then studied at Yale , where he graduated with a bachelor's degree in 1949 .

After graduating, he worked as a reporter for the Hartford Courant . From 1956 to 1960 he was co-editor of a travel magazine. In addition, he published freelance in various publications.

Knowles was encouraged by Thornton Wilder to write about his most vivid memories. His debut novel Another Peace is therefore based on his school years at Phillips Exeter Academy. The novel sold over eight million copies and was included in English language curricula across the United States. Another Peace was filmed for cinema in 1972. In 2004 a TV film was released.

In the 1960s he was Writer in Residence at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Princeton University . In 1987 he moved to Fort Lauderdale. In the 1990s he taught creative writing at Florida Atlantic University . Knowles died on November 29, 2001 after a brief illness in a convalescent home.
