John Leveson-Gower, 1st Baron Gower

John Leveson-Gower, 1st Baron Gower PC (born January 7, 1675 in Stittenham , Yorkshire , † August 31, 1709 in Belvoir Castle , Grantham , Lincolnshire ) was an English politician and peer.

Life

He was the son of Sir William Leveson-Gower, 4th Baronet and his wife Jane Granville. His maternal grandparents were John Granville, 1st Earl of Bath and his wife Jane Wyche, a daughter of Sir Peter Wyche .

At the death of his father in 1691 he inherited his title of baronet , of Sittenham in the County of York.

John Leveson-Gower was from 1692 to 1703 MP in the House of Commons for the Tories in the constituency of Newcastle-under-Lyne . He was on March 16, 1703 as Baron Gower , of Sittenham in the County of York, raised to a peer , which a seat in the House of Lords was connected. He was a member of the Privy Council from 1702 to 1707 , and from 1702 to 1706 Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster and 1706 Commissioner of the Union .

Marriage and offspring

In September 1692 he married Lady Catherine Manners (1675–1722), a daughter of John Manners, 1st Duke of Rutland, and had six children with her:
