John Mallory Bates

John Mallory Bates (born January 3, 1846 in Wallingford , Connecticut , † May 25, 1930 in Hastings , Nebraska ) was an American clergyman and botanist. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Bates ".

Life

Bates studied at Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut with a bachelor's degree in 1872 and a master's degree in 1875 and theology at Berkeley Divinity School in Middleton, Connecticut . From 1883 to 1886 he was headmaster and chaplain of Bethany College in Topeka , then moved to Valentine (Nebraska) and was from 1902 in Red Cloud (Nebraska) , where he was rector of Grace Church until 1920.

Bates himself published little on ornithology, but left his observations to others, for example Lawrence Bruner (Bruner: Some notes on Nebraska Birds 1896, Bruner, Walcott, Swenk: Birds of Nebraska 1904). He was a member of the American Ornithologists Union (1899) and a correspondent for the Biological Survey. In 1902 he was President of the Nebraska Ornithologists Union.

He is known for studying the plants and birds in Nebraska . Bates only dealt with botany from 1899 and especially with grasses with a view to agricultural applications (forage grasses).

He was a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Nebraska Academy of Sciences.
