John Mattes

John Mattes (* 1856 in Nendingen , Kingdom of Württemberg as Johann Mattes; † after 1917) was an American politician ( Republican Party ) and master brewer .

Life

Mattes was born in Nendingen and emigrated with his family from Burlington (1864) and Brookfield (1866) to Des Moines (1876). It was there that his uncles Paul and John founded Mattes Brewery , of which he became a shareholder in 1886.

John Mattes lived in Nebraska City , where he served as mayor, House of Representatives, and Senate member of Nebraska for Otoe County . He ran for governor and campaigned against women's suffrage . Under President Cleveland , he served in the Department of Agriculture .

1906, he named the brewery in Otoe Brewing Co. to. With the alcohol prohibition in Nebraska the brewery was closed in 1917.

From 1917 to 1918 he was President of the Senate.
