John McAreavey (born February 2, 1949 in Banbridge , County Down ) is an Irish clergyman and emeritus Roman Catholic Bishop of Dromore .

Life

After finishing school, McAreavey studied Catholic Theology and Modern Languages ​​at St Patrick's College in Maynooth , where he earned his Bachelor's degree in 1969 and 1972, respectively . On 10 June 1973 Bishop donated his Eugene O'Doherty the priesthood . As a post-graduate student he studied canon law from 1974 to 1978 at the Pontifical Gregorian University , where he received his doctorate in 1978 . On his return from Rome he taught at St. Colman's College . In 1988 McAreavey was appointed professor of canon law at St Patrick's College in Maynooth. In the following years he wrote various theological works, including the 1997 canon law book The Canon Law of Marriage and the Family .

Pope John Paul II named McAreavey Bishop of Dromore on June 4, 1999 . The Archbishop of Armagh , Seán Brady , ordained him episcopal on September 19 of the same year . Co- consecrators were the Bishop of Cloyne , John Magee SPS , and his predecessor Francis Brooks .

On March 1, 2018, McAreavey offered to resign immediately from his bishopric under pressure from many believers. He had come under fire for mistaking the death officer for a priest and headmaster from Newry in 2002, who had been suspected of pedophilia since 1994 and abuse allegations against numerous victims . The perpetrator was never convicted during his lifetime. On March 26, 2018, the Vatican announced that Pope Francis had accepted the resignation of the Northern Irish bishop.
