John Herbert McCluskey, Baron McCluskey ( QC , Scotland ) (born June 12, 1929 in Glasgow ; † July 20, 2017 in Edinburgh ) was a British lawyer and politician who was Solicitor General of Scotland from 1974 to 1979 and as Life since 1976 Peer member of the House of Lords .

Life

After attending St Bede's College in Manchester and the Holy Cross Academy in Edinburgh , McCluskey completed a law degree at the University of Edinburgh , where he obtained a Master of Arts (MA) in 1950 and a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B. ).

After completing his studies and subsequent military service with the Royal Air Force, he joined the Scottish Public Prosecutor's Office ( Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service ), where he initially became an advocate in 1955 . After his appointment as Advocate Depute in 1964, he represented indictments before the Scottish High Court of Justiciary and was appointed Crown Attorney in 1967 for his services . He later served as Principal Sheriff on the Sheriff's Court for the Dumfries and Galloway District from 1973 to 1974 .

In 1974, McCluskey was appointed as the successor to William Stewart as Solicitor General for Scotland and was thus deputy to the Lord Advocate , the Chief Justice of the Scottish Executive, until his replacement by Nicholas Fairbairn .

By a letters patent dated September 29, 1976, McCluskey was raised to the nobility as a life peer with the title Baron McCluskey , of Church Hill in the District of City of Edinburgh . Shortly after its introduction was carried out ( Introduction ) as a member of the House of Lords . In the upper house he belongs to the Labor Party faction , but later switched to the group of so-called Crossbenchers . After the Labor Party's defeat in the general election on May 3, 1979 , he became spokesman for the opposition Labor Group for Legal Affairs of Scotland.

Subsequently, Lord McCluskey served as Senator of the College of Justice between 1984 and 2000 and thus as one of the judges at the Supreme Court of Scotland. During this time he gave lectures on legal topics in the radio program of BBC Radio 4 under the title Law, Justice and Democracy in 1986 as part of the so-called Reith Lectures .

Lord McCluskey, in 1989 a honorary doctorate of rights (Hon. LL.D.) of the University of Dundee got was also 1997-2004 chairman of the John Smith -Memorial Trust and at the same time between 2000 and 2001 Chairman of the elderly charity Age Concern Scotland. He was also vice-chairman of the Institute for Human Rights of the International Bar Association (IBA) from 1995 to 2000.
