John McIntyre (Archbishop)

John McIntyre (born January 1, 1855 in Birmingham , † November 21, 1935 ) was Archbishop of Birmingham .

Life

He attended Sedgley Park School, Wolverhampton , English College, Douai , St Bernard Seminary, Olton and English College , Rome . After his ordination on May 22, 1880, he worked in Colwich , Staffordshire , and then alternatively in Oscott and Olton until 1912. Between 1898 and 1912 he was vice rector of St Mary 's College, Oscott.

Pope Pius X appointed him on June 24, 1912 auxiliary bishop in Birmingham and titular bishop of Lamus . The Archbishop of Birmingham, Edward Ilsley , ordained him episcopal on July 30 of the same year ; Co- consecrators were Francis Edward Joseph Mostyn , Bishop of Menevia , and George Ambrose Burton , Bishop of Clifton . The next year, despite protests from Archbishop Ilsley, he became rector of the English College in Rome . On August 24, 1917 he was made titular Archbishop of Oxyrynchus .

After Ilsley's retirement , John McIntyre was appointed Archbishop of Birmingham on June 16, 1921 and ceremonially introduced on July 5 of the same year in Birmingham Cathedral . He resigned from his office on November 17, 1928 due to illness. Pope Pius XI thereupon appointed him titular archbishop of Odessus .
