John Mendelsohn (medic)
John Mendelsohn (born August 31, 1936 in Cincinnati , Ohio - † January 7, 2019 ) was an American oncologist at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston , Texas . He made outstanding contributions to the clinical development of cetuximab , a therapeutic chimeric monoclonal antibody of the IgG1 type against the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) , which is used in oncology (cancer medicine) for cancer immunotherapy .
Mendelsohn earned a bachelor's degree in biochemistry from Harvard University in 1958 and an MD from Harvard Medical School in 1963, completing his medical degree. Academic positions (professorships) were the University of California, San Diego (1970–1985), Cornell University and Sloan-Kettering Institute for Cancer Research (1985–1996) and the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center (from 1996).
