John Michael Rist

John Michael Rist (born July 6, 1936 in Romford ) is a British-Canadian philosopher , philosophy historian and classical philologist .

Life

From 1944 to 1954, Rist attended Brentwood School. From 1956 to 1959 he studied at Trinity College of the University of Cambridge (Minor, then Senior Scholar) (1957 Classical Preliminaries in Cambridge , Class 1, 1958 Classical Tripos Part 1, Class 1 1959 Classical Tripos Part 2 (specialization: ancient philosophy ), Class 1 1963 MA ( Cantab. )). He taught at the University College of Toronto (1959–1963 Lecturer in Greek, 1963–1965 Assistant Professor of Greek, 1965–1969 Associate Professor of Greek). From 1969 to 1980 he taught as Professor of Classics at the University of Toronto. From 1980 to 1983 he was Regius Professor of Classics at the University of Aberdeen . From 1983 to 1996 he was Professor of Classics and Philosophy at the University of Toronto. Since 1998 he has been visiting professor at the Institutum Patristicum Augustinianum . From 2012 to 2014 he was Kurt Pritzl OP Professor of Philosophy at the Catholic University of America .

His main research interests are the Stoa , Epicurus , Plato , Aristotle , Platonism , Neoplatonism , Christian Platonism, Augustine and ancient ethics .
