John O'Neil

John Thomas O'Neil (born October 4, 1898 in Faulkton , South Dakota , † March 25, 1950 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American rugby union player. The 1.77 m tall first line striker was double Olympic champion in 1920 and 1924 with the US selection .

O'Neil came from a wealthy Texan family in the petroleum industry; as a student at Santa Clara University he came into contact with rugby. He was part of the team from Santa Clara that 1915-17 defeated the California rugby and after ten wins in a row against UC Berkeley 1916 champions. In addition to O'Neil, the Santa Clara team provided four US rugby Olympic champions in 1920 and two in 1924. He was an important organizer and financier of both US gymnastics for the Olympic Games and was used in all of the Eagles' games at the Olympics and in the only further test of the US selection on the two European tours in October 1920 against France . In the final of the 1924 Olympic competition , also against France, O'Neil broke a relatively fresh appendiceal scar from a kick in the stomach, but because he was unable to replace him with another player, he played the match to the end.

O'Neil worked in the family's petroleum business. With his brother Louis, he was one of the first investors in the Cat Creek oil field in Petroleum County , Montana . In 1926 they sold their investments there to the California Oil Company for $ 5 million . From 1924 he ran an oil refinery at Sunburst , Montana .
