John Paul Jones (born October 15, 1890 in Washington, DC , † January 5, 1970 in Tucson ) was an American middle-distance runner .
At the Olympic Games in Stockholm in 1912, he was eliminated over 800 m in the preliminary run and came fourth over 1500 m .
In 1911 he won the mile run of the IC4A championship in 4: 15.4 minutes, the fastest time of an amateur up to that point ( Walter George set the world best time for professionals in 1886 with 4:12 ¾ minutes). In 1912 and 1913 he defended his IC4A title over this distance. His time of 1913 (4: 14.4 min) was recognized by the IAAF as the first official world record. In 1911 and 1912 he was also IC4A champion over 880 yards .
John Paul Jones graduated from Cornell University in 1913 .
