J. Peter Lesley (also: JP Lesley and Peter Lesley, Jr .; born September 17, 1819 in Philadelphia ; † June 1, 1903 ) was an American geologist .

Life

Peter Lesley studied theology at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. After graduating in 1838, he spent three years as assistant to Henry Darwin Rogers (1808–1866) on the first geological survey of Pennsylvania . In 1844 he completed his studies at the theological seminary in Princeton ( New Jersey ), undertook major foot trips in Germany between 1842 and 1844, studied in Halle (Saale) , put theology aside and settled in his hometown as a geologist in 1850. Since then he has written his name JP Lesley , the J standing for junior. In 1863 Lesley was a founding member of the National Academy of Sciences , and in 1864 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .

In 1863 he visited the Bessemer steelworks in Sheffield in Europe , worked as American commissioner at the Paris World Exhibition in 1867 , then traveled to Egypt and was appointed professor of geology and mining at the University of Pennsylvania in 1873, and official geologist of the State of Pennsylvania in 1874. In 1884 he became President of the American Association for the Advancement of Science , and from 1887 to 1898 Vice President of the American Philosophical Society .
