John Pole, 3rd Baronet
Sir John Pole, 3rd Baronet ( June 17, 1649 - March 13, 1708 ) was an English nobleman and politician who was elected six times as a member of the House of Commons .
origin
John Pole came from the Pole family , a Gentry family of Devon . He was the eldest son of Sir Courtenay Pole, 2nd Baronet and his wife Urith Shapcote.
Political activity
As early as 1673, Pole took over the first local offices. In 1680 he became Deputy Lieutenant and Colonel in the Devon Militia . While his father was still alive, Pole was elected in the general election in 1685 as a candidate for the court party as MP for Borough Lyme Regis . However, nothing is known about his activities in the House of Commons during the reign of James II . He also served as mayor of Honiton in 1685 , where he supported the candidacies of Sir Thomas Putt and his cousin Edmund Walrond in the general election. At the request of the government, he refused to repeal the test file and the penal laws , whereupon he lost his offices. As one of the first members of the gentry of south-west England, he supported the landing of William of Orange's troops in Devon on November 17, 1688 during the Glorious Revolution . The new king reinstated him as deputy lieutenant and colonel and justice of the peace. In the general election in 1689, Pole was re-elected as MP for Lyme Regis. Although he had supported the Glorious Revolution, he now remained as Tory an opponent of the government. In the general election in the spring of 1690 he lost the election in Tregony to Sir John Tremayne and Hugh Fortescue . An objection to the election had no consequences. After his father's death in 1695, he inherited his estate and the title of Baronet , of Shute House in the County of Devon. In the general election in 1695 he did not run, only in the 1698 election he was elected as the Tories candidate for Bossiney . In the House of Commons he was quickly seen again as an opponent of the government. In the general election in December 1701 he was elected as Knight of the Shire for Devon, in the election in 1702 as MP for East Looe . His eldest son, William Pole , was also elected MP in the December 1701 election. He did not run in the general election of 1705, but in a by-election in January 1707 after the death of John Spark , he was elected MP for Newport with the support of the Morice family, his wife's family .
Other, family and offspring
Pole was considered a heavy drinker and suffered from gout . He was buried in the Pole Chapel of Colyton Parish Church.
