John Richard Hardy

John Richard Hardy (born January 9, 1935 in Watford , Hertfordshire , † May 5, 2011 in Lincoln , Nebraska ) was a British physicist .

Hardy was the son of a telecommunications engineer on the British Railways. He studied physics at the University of Bristol with a bachelor's degree in 1956 and a doctorate in 1959. He was then an Associated Electrical Industries Research Fellow at the University of Reading and from 1962 to 1965 AERC (Atomic Energy Research Establishment) fellow at Harwell. In 1966 he went first as a visiting professor at the University of Nebraska , where he became an associate professor in 1967 and a professor in 1968. In 1993 he became George Holmes Professor of Physics. In 2003 he retired.

Hardy was a consultant to the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, DC He was considered a leading expert on the dynamics of lattice vibrations in crystals, for which he used the Deformation Dipole Model (DD) in the 1960s to calculate the Lattice vibrations of isolators developed (first 1960). He also dealt with shock wave propagation in solids, ferroelectrics (where he worked closely with the experimenter Frank G. Ullman) and high-temperature superconductors .

In 1989 he received the University of Nebraska Award for Outstanding Research (Orca Prize).
