John Sharkey, Baron Sharkey

John Kevin Sharkey, Baron Sharkey (born September 24, 1947 ) is a British manager and politician of the Liberal Democrats who has been a life peer member of the House of Lords since 2010 .

Life

After attending school and studying, Sharkey worked for the advertising agency Benton & Bowles and then at KMP, before moving to the advertising agency Saatchi & Saatchi in 1984 . There he became Deputy Chairman of the Board in 1986 and then Managing Director in 1987. He was also Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Broad Street Group and BDDP and between 1990 and 1997 was Founding Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Bainsfair Sharkey Trott (BST-BBDP). After the merger of BST-BBDP with GGT Advertising, he was chairman of the board of the resulting advertising agency BBDP GGT from 1997 to 1998. Since 1998 he has been Managing Director of Europe Manpower plc.

Sharkey was the leader of the Liberal Democrats campaign for the general election on May 6, 2010 . By a letters patent dated December 20, 2010, Sharkey was raised to the nobility as a life peer with the title Baron Sharkey , of Niton Undercliff in the County of the Isle of Wight . Shortly thereafter took place 21 December 2010 on its introduction ( Introduction ) as a member of the House of Lords . In the upper house it belongs to the faction of the Liberal Democrats. In 2011 he was also director of the YES! To Fairer Votes for the UK suffrage referendum .

In 2013, he submitted an application for Alan Turing's rehabilitation to the House of Lords. Sharkey had studied mathematics in Manchester in the 1960s with Turing's only graduate student Robin Gandy .
