John Sherwood (athlete)

John Sherwood (born June 4, 1945 in Selby ) is a former British hurdler who specialized in the 400-meter distance .

In 1967 he won silver at the Universiade . The following year he won the bronze medal at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City with his personal best of 49.0 s, behind his compatriot David Hemery , who set a world record with 48.1 s, and the German Gerhard Hennige (49.0 s) s). In the 4 x 400 meter relay , he came in fifth with the British team.

A silver medal at the European Athletics Championships in Athens in 1969 was followed by a gold medal at the British Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh in 1970 , where he also won bronze in the 4-by-400-meter relay with the English team. At the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, he was eliminated in the preliminary stages.

Four times he was English champion over 440 yard hurdles and 400 m hurdles (1966, 1967, 1969, 1971).

John Sherwood started for the Birchfield Harriers. He is married to the long jumper Sheila Sherwood (née Parkin).
