John Stewart, 3rd Earl of Lennox
John Stewart, 3rd Earl of Lennox (* around 1490 ; † September 4, 1526 in Linlithgow ), was a Scottish nobleman from the Stewart family .
John was a son of Matthew Stewart, 2nd Earl of Lennox and his wife Elizabeth Hamilton. He followed his father in 1513 as 3rd Earl of Lennox .
Because of his proximity to the throne, he was considered a rival to the powerful Hamilton family. The Earl led an army to Linlithgow to free the young King James V of Scotland from the influence of the pro-English Douglas family , but was defeated by the Earl of Arran , imprisoned and murdered in cold blood by James Hamilton of Finnart , the bastard of Arran .
In 1511 John married Elizabeth, daughter of John Stewart, 1st Earl of Atholl, and had the following children with her:
- Elizabeth Stewart († 1564), ⚭ John Gordon, 11th Earl of Sutherland ; she had an illegitimate son with King Jacob V (Adam, † 1600)
- Matthew Stewart, 4th Earl of Lennox (1516–1571), father of Henry Stewart, Lord Darnley
- Robert Stewart, 1st Earl of March (1517–1586)
- John Stewart (1519–1567), 5th Seigneur d'Aubigny, father of Esmé Stewart, 1st Duke of Lennox
