career

Tu was born in mainland China in 1940 and grew up in Taiwan. He describes himself as a mediocre student. In 1960 he emigrated to Germany because he had an uncle there who owned a Chinese restaurant. He couldn't speak German at the time, but he could speak a few sentences in English, which is why after a few weeks he went out on the street to find someone who spoke English. A cyclist took him to a priest who had lived in China, who sent him to a language school in Munich. Tu wanted to study electrical engineering, but before he could study he had to have two years of professional experience, which is why he worked in a shipbuilding factory in Kiel .

The foreman there treated him like cheap labor. This experience shaped him. So at first he couldn't find an apartment. He believed that it was because he was a foreigner, because in his opinion German society was very homogeneous. He felt discriminated against and for him the word foreigner implies that you are a second class citizen. When he found an apartment, it did not provide hot water. His landlady has to put a bucket of water in front of his apartment every day. He was freezing every night and to wash his mop, he first had to break open the frozen water. This experience hardened him. So he remembers it every time he has a difficult problem.

After working there for two years, he studied electrical engineering at the Technical University of Darmstadt . He completed his studies in 1970 as a graduate engineer . After completing his studies, he worked for Motorola in Wiesbaden . In 1971 he emigrated to the United States.

He met his future business partner David Sun in 1978 in a basketball league. With him he founded Kingston Technology in 1987 out of a garage . The company's name comes from one of John Tu's favorite bands, The Kingston Trio .
