John W. Wilcox, Jr.

John Walter Wilcox, Jr. (born March 22, 1882 in Milledgeville (Georgia) , † March 27, 1942 off Newfoundland ) was an admiral in the United States Navy .

biography

Wilcox graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1905 , his first command in 1917 was the patrol boat USS Yacona , a former yacht . From 1931 to 1934 he was the sports director of the Naval Academy, and from September 1940 to December 1941 he was President of the Board of Inspection and Survey of the US Navy. He was then promoted to commander of the battleships of the US Atlantic Fleet and made the battleship USS Washington his flagship. On 25 March 1942, the left Task Force 39 to Washington , the Casco Bay in Maine and ran into the North Atlantic. Two days later, Rear Admiral Wilcox was washed off board the Washington at 42 24 'N, 6 1 34' W in winds six to seven . He had been unaccompanied on deck. Despite an intensive search, he could not be saved, and the search for his corpse had to be stopped. Rear Admiral Robert C. Giffen took command of the unit on board the cruiser USS Wichita .
