Robert Carlisle Giffen (born June 29, 1886 in West Chester , Pennsylvania , † December 10, 1962 in Annapolis , Maryland ) was a Vice Admiral in the United States Navy .

biography

Robert Carlisle Giffen was born on June 29, 1886 in West Chester, Pennsylvania. He attended the University of Notre Dame in South Bend , Indiana before being inducted into the United States Naval Academy in 1903 . Midshipman Giffen graduated from the Academy in 1907 and was transferred to the battleship USS Virginia . He took part in the circumnavigation of the Great White Fleet between 1907 and 1909. Over the next four years, Giffen served on various US Navy ships and participated in annual shooting competitions. Between 1913 and 1915 he was stationed as a Lieutenant (Junior Grade) in the Washington Navy Yard , then he was transferred to the destroyer USS Wainwright .

Promoted to Lieutenant Commander, Giffen commanded the destroyer USS Trippe from 1917 to mid-1918 as part of the British Grand Fleet in the North Sea . His next ship was the USS Schley , which operated from Gibraltar in the Mediterranean . In August 1919, Giffen was transferred to San Francisco . After a time as an instructor at the Naval Academy and in Keyport , Washington, he was in command of the cruiser USS Huron and the gunboat USS Sacramento . Between 1934 and 1937 he was again an instructor in Annapolis, then he commanded the light cruiser USS Savannah until 1940 .

Giffen visited in 1940, the Naval War College and spent several months as an advisor to the Chief of Naval Operations in Washington, DC to Rear Admiral promoted, took Giffen in March 1941 the command of a cruiser division, who attended the neutrality patrols in the North Atlantic. After the United States entered the war, the association escorted supply convoys across the Atlantic. Here Giffen worked closely with Sir John Tovey , the commander of the British Home Fleet . in November 1942 Giffen's association supported the landing in North Africa , and his ships also took French units under fire off Casablanca .

In 1943 and 1944 Giffen commanded battleship and cruiser units in the Pacific , he took part in the later battles for Guadalcanal and the battles for the Gilbert and Marshall Islands . In May 1944, Giffen was promoted to Vice Admiral and became Commander of the 10th Marine District in the Caribbean. From August 1945 he was in command of all supply units in the Atlantic Fleet . In early September 1946 Vice Admiral Robert C. Giffen retired from active service. He died on December 10, 1962 in Annapolis, Maryland.
