John Ward (drummer)

John Ward (* 15. December 1927 in Mechelen , † 12. May 2015 ) was a Belgian jazz - drummer . His trademarks are "his elegant swing and drive , with which he inspires the audience and fellow musicians alike."

Live and act

Ward began his career with Gus Clark ; In 1946 he played with Bill Alexandre , with whom the first recordings were made. In May 1949 he was part of the Bob Shots around Jacques Pelzer , Bobby Jaspar , Fats Sadi and Francy Boland in Paris , with whom he recorded several titles for Pacific. Also in Paris he recorded with the Toots Thielemans Quartet du Hot Club de Belgique (with Francis Coppieters and Jean Warland ). From mid-1949 to 1974 he was a member of the Hazy Osterwald sextet, in which he also performed singing and shows. Here he took over the lowest vocal range.

With the singer Bibi Johns , he presented the pop single "That can be dangerous" ( Polydor ) in 1961 . In later years he played in numerous national and international groups and led his own trio in Switzerland, since 2005 with Elmar Kluth (piano) and Thomas Hirt (bass), for the album Sarah Sings With the John Ward Trio, supplemented by the singer Sarah Bang.

In the field of jazz he was involved in 31 recording sessions between 1948 and 1964.
