John Warren (musician)
John Warren (born September 23, 1938 in Montreal ) is a Canadian jazz musician (baritone saxophone, flute), who has particularly emerged as a composer.
Live and act
Warren was initially self-taught as a musician , but then underwent training at the McGill University Conservatory . In 1962 he moved to England, where he from 1967 in the Concert Band of Mike Westbrook played and started in 1968 an own big band in which John Surman , Alan Skidmore , Ray Warleigh , Kenny Wheeler , Harry Beckett , Malcolm Griffiths and John Taylor were involved. With this band and The Trio (Surman, Barre Phillips , Stu Martin ) he recorded his debut album Tales of the Algonquin in 1970 . In 1972 he toured with the London Jazz Composers Orchestra . With his own band he was on two tours in Germany and Switzerland. On the initiative of John Surman, he put together his Brass Project in 1981 , with which he appeared at international festivals and in 1992 recorded a CD for ECM . In 1990 he moved to York , where he directed The Warren Project and from 1996 the big band Voice of the North . Since 2001 he has been composing for the specially founded 12-piece Northern Brass (double CD 2003).
Warren also wrote for the Danish Radio Big Band , the Kurt Edelhagen Orchestra , the WDR Big Band Köln , the BBC Big Band, Norma Winstone , Alan Skidmore, Karin Krog and Tim Garland . He also arranged for Louis Moholo's Dedication Orchestra and film music for George Fenton . Between 1997 and 2002 he also worked as a music teacher at Newcastle College .
