Malcolm Griffiths

Malcolm Jesse Griffiths (born September 29, 1941 in Barnet , Hertfordshire ) is a British modern jazz trombonist .

Live and act

Griffiths learned the piano as a child before turning to the trombone at age 17 . After graduating in economics , he studied trombone at the London College of Music . He first played in Mike Westbrook's band , then in 1968 and 1969 with John Surman , Michael Gibbs and Ray Russell , before founding his own band and touring England and the USA with Buddy Rich . He was then a member of Chris McGregor's Brotherhood of Breath and the Alan Skidmore quintet , but also performed with the John Warren big band and with Paul Rutherford's Iskra in 1912 . In 1972 he became a member of John Dankworth's orchestra . In the mid-1970s he continued to work with Stan Sulzmann , Alan Cohen, Surman, Harry Miller and Georgie Fame . From the late 1970s he was a member of the octet and the big band of Stan Tracey , continued to work with Gibbs and Westbrook and organized Gil Evans' big band. He played in the Orchestra of the Welsh National Opera and toured with Diana Ross , Gladys Knight , The Three Degrees and Sinéad O'Connor , for whom he also arranged. He also played in Louis Moholo's Dedication Orchestra and worked for George Fenton , John Altman, Gil Askey and Björk .
