John Wodehouse, 3rd Earl of Kimberley , CBE , MC (* 11. November 1883 ; † 16th April 1941 in London ) was a British peer , politician of the Liberal Party and polo players .

Life

He was the eldest son of John Wodehouse, 2nd Earl of Kimberley and grandson of former British Foreign Secretary John Wodehouse, 1st Earl of Kimberley . After studying at Eton College and Trinity Hall at the University of Cambridge , he was a member of the House of Commons from 1906 to 1910 , representing the Mid-Norfolk constituency.

Wodehouse was a member of the exclusive Hurlingham Club and played polo. At the Olympic Games in London in 1908 he won the silver medal with the Hurlingham team. From 1914 to 1918 he served during the First World War as a cavalry officer in the regiment 16th Lancers . He was awarded the Military Cross and the Croix de guerre .

After the war ended, Wodehouse was Assistant Private Secretary to Colonial Secretary Winston Churchill . At the Olympic Games in Antwerp in 1920 he took part in the polo tournament for Great Britain and became Olympic champion. When his father died in 1932, he inherited his title Earl of Kimberley and the associated seat in the House of Lords . During a visit to London he was killed in a German air raid .
