Johnnie Carson
Johnnie Carson (born April 7, 1943 in Chicago , Illinois ) is an American diplomat .
Life
In 1965 Johnnie Carson earned a BA in History and Political Science from Drake University . Until 1975 he studied international relations at the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London and graduated with a Master of Arts . From 1965 to 1968 he worked for the Peace Corps in Tanzania .
In 1968 Carson joined the foreign service. From 1969 to 1971 he was accredited in Nigeria . From 1971 to 1974 he was employed by the intelligence service at the United States Department of Defense . From 1975 to 1978 he was accredited in Mozambique . From 1978 to 1979, Carson served as a staff clerk with a secretary of state. From 1979 to 1982 he was Chief Executive Officer of the US House of Representatives Africa Committee . Carson was accredited in Portugal from 1982 to 1986 and in Botswana from 1986 to 1990 . From 1997 to 1999, Carson was Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Africa division of the US State Department . From 2003 to 2006, Carson was Vice President of the National Defense University in Washington. Carson served on the National Intelligence Council from September 2006 to March 2009 . In March 2009, appointed Barack Obama Johnnie Carson on Secretary of State for African Affairs ( Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs ); he resigned from this office in March 2013.
Carson is married with three children and lives in Reston .
