John Andrew Burroughs, Jr. (born July 31, 1936 in Washington, DC , † September 11, 2014 there ) was the United States Ambassador to Malawi and Uganda .

Life

After graduating from high school, John Burroughs played briefly as a professional with the Philadelphia Eagles . He graduated from the University of Iowa with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science in 1959 . During his studies, he played for the Iowa Hawkeyes university team in two Rose Bowl American football games with Coach Forest Evashevski and was mentioned in the All-Americans .

From 1960 to 1963 he worked in the Passport Office of the Department of State and then until 1966 as an assistant in the Department of State economics. From 1966 to 1970 the US Navy recruited volunteers for service in Vietnam and was then a member of the Navy from 1970 to 1977. After returning to the Political Department of the Department of State from 1984 to 1985, he went to the Joint Center for Political and Economical Studies in Washington as a Fellow . From 1985 to 1988, Burroughs was the first African American US Consul General in Cape Town , South Africa .

In 1991 Burroughs gave seminars at Lincoln University , Pennsylvania, and in 1993 he led the US government's humanitarian aid to Sudan . He was retired in April 1994.

John Burroughs was married.
