Johann Heinrich von Ostein (* 1579 ; † November 26, 1646 in Delsberg ) was Prince-Bishop of the Diocese of Basel for eighteen years from 1628 .

Life

Johann Heinrich von Ostein came from the Alsatian noble family of the Ostein and was born as the son of Johann Jakob I von Ostein and his wife Apollonia nee. from Hallweil. Franz Kaspar von Stadion (1637–1704), who later became Prince-Bishop of Lavant , was his great-nephew.

Ostein was accepted into the cathedral chapter of Basel in 1594 . In 1604 he was promoted to provost of the Moutier-Grandval monastery and served as Basel vicar general from 1611 to 1614 . He also sat on the spiritual council from 1611.

In Delsberg, Johann Heinrich von Ostein was appointed Bishop of Basel in 1628 . In 1629 he was consecrated as bishop in Pruntrut , consecrator was the Basel auxiliary bishop Jean Bernard d'Angeloch . He opened the Capuchin Monastery in Delsberg in 1630 and the Capuchin Monastery in Sulz two years later in Alsace. The ruling territory of the bishop was abused as a transit country from 1632 by the parties involved in the Thirty Years War , and so the looting and occupation of the Ajoie by the French from 1636 to 1643 led to the impoverishment of the bishopric. From 1632 to 1640 von Ostein lived outside his residence due to the war.
