Johnny Christensen

Johnny Carl Christensen (born March 5, 1930 in Frederiksberg ) is a Danish classical philologist and historian of philosophy .

Christensen visited the metropolitan cities in Copenhagen from 1948 , then for a year the Krogerup Højskole in Humlebæk . From 1951 to 1953 he studied at the University of California ; there he also taught philosophy last year. In 1955 he was a candidate for a master's degree in classical philology and English at the University of Copenhagen , where he also taught from 1956. In 1960 he became a university adjunct, in 1962 he received his doctorate with a dissertation on The Unity of Stoic Philosophy and was professor in classical philology from 1962 to 1996. From 1964 to 1975 he was a member of the management of the Volkshochschule (Folkeuniversitetet) in Copenhagen, from 1964 to 1969 its chairman. From 1965 to 1970 he was deputy chairman of the Philological-Historical Society (Filologisk-historisk samfund). From 1968 to 1972 he was a member of the consistory, from 1971 to 1972 prorector, from 1977 head of the Institute for Classical Philology. In 1968 he became a member of the Vetenskapssocieteten in Lund and in 1979 of Det Kongelige Danske Videnskabernes Selskab .

Christensen is part of the Danish tradition of classical philology founded by Johan Nicolai Madvig . He taught and researched in numerous areas of classical antiquity , but was particularly prominent through his monograph on the unity of the stoic teaching structure, which was recently reissued.

His students include Sten Ebbesen and Troels Engberg-Pedersen .
