Johnny Rebel

Johnny Rebel , actually Clifford Joseph "Pee Wee" Trahan (born September 25, 1938 in Moss Bluff ( Louisiana ), USA ; † September 3, 2016 in Rayne (Louisiana) , USA) was an American cajun and country musician .

Life

Trahan used the pseudonym Johnny Rebel for music with unambiguous racist song lyrics, which he published on JD "Jay" Miller's label "Reb Rebel", especially during the 1960s .

He often used the word nigger in his texts and sympathized with the racial segregation of the Jim Crow era and the Ku Klux Klan . Almost all of his songs vilified African Americans and the civil rights movement . For recordings without an obvious racist background and other genres of music, Traham used various pseudonyms such as Tommy Todd and Jericho Jones for rockabilly , Filthy McNasty for sexual texts, or Johnny Blaine and Pee Wee Trahan for country music .

The recordings for the first twelve songs under the name Johnny Rebel were made between 1966 and 1969, when the civil rights movement and the black power movement were at their peak. In addition to openly racist songs such as Nigger, Nigger or Who Likes a Nigger , two titles were also published that deal with other topics: Keep a Workin 'Big Jim describes the investigations of District Attorney Jim Garrison into the assassination attempt on John F. Kennedy and (Federal Aid Hell! ) The Money Belongs to Us denounces the US subsidy policy.

Two of his tracks were re-released by Reb Rebel in 1971 on a sampler entitled For Segregationists Only .

After 30 years without publication, the CD single Infidel Anthem (Fuck You, Osama Bin Laden!) Was released in 2001 as a reaction to the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 in the USA . The album also It's the Attitude, Stupid! appeared in 2003.

His songs were played by various right-wing rock bands, for example Coon Town served as a template for Kreuzberg von Landser . His recorded under the name Jericho Jones, non-racist Black Magic title was covered in 1981 by the British neo-rockabilly band Polecats .

Under the name Filthy McNasty , Trahan covered the Chuck Berry song My Ding-A-Ling , but tightened the text again in a clearly sexual direction.
