Jonathan (Tannaite)
R. Jonathan was an ancient Jewish scholar who is counted among the third generation of Tannaites and worked in Babylonia around the middle of the second century AD.
He was one of the foremost disciples of Ishmael and fellow student and opponent R. Joschias .
His identity is not definitely clarified in research, some consider him the same person as Jonatan (Natan) ben Josef (or Jose).
It is mentioned only once in the Mishnah , with a saying in the fathers' sayings :
- "Whoever follows the Torah in his poverty will be able to follow it in prosperity; and whoever neglects the Torah in prosperity will come to neglect it out of poverty" (Pirqe Abot IV, 9).
