Jonathan A. Campbell

Jonathan Atwood Campbell (born May 13, 1947 in Lexington , Kentucky ) is an American herpetologist .

Life

Campbell is the son of William Garth and Susan Campbell, née Randall. In 1969 he received a Bachelor of Science degree in English and Anthropology from the University of Mississippi . In 1977 he graduated with a Master of Science in Biology from the University of Texas at Arlington and in 1980 a Master of Philosophy in Systematics and Ecology from the University of Kansas . In 1982, he was with the dissertation The biogeography of the cloud forest herpetofauna of Middle America, with special reference to the Sierra de las Minas of Guatemala under the direction of William E. Duellman at the University of Kansas for Ph.D. PhD in systematics and ecology .

From January 1983 to January 1988 he was an assistant professor and from January 1988 to January 1993 he was an adjunct professor at the University of Texas at Arlington . Since January 1993 he has been a full professor at the University of Texas at Arlington.

From January 1983 to January 2013 he was director of the herpetological collection at the University of Texas at Arlington. Since February 2000 he has been a research fellow at the American Museum of Natural History . From May 2003 to August 2014, he was Chair of the Department of Biology at the University of Texas at Arlington.

The focus of Campbell's research is on the biodiversity and systematics of neotropical amphibians and reptiles (especially venomous snakes ). Between 1973 and 2015 he carried out extensive field studies in North America , Central America , South America and West Africa over a period of 104 months, including Costa Rica (4 months), Guatemala (62 months), Mexico (35 months) and Cameroon ( 3 months). Over 150 new species were discovered during these expeditions.

Campbell has co-authored four books on snakes, including The Venomous Reptiles of Latin America (1989, with William W. Lamar), Biology of the Pitvipers (1992, with Edmund D. Brodie, Jr.), Snake Species of the World, A Taxonomic and Geographic Reference. Vol. 1 (1999, with Roy W. McDiarmid and T'Shaka A. Touré) and The Venomous Reptiles of the Western Hemisphere (2004, with William W. Lamar). In 1998 he published the book The Amphibians and Reptiles of Northern Guatemala, Yucatán, and Belize .

Campbell is a member of the Herpetologists' League , the American Society of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists , the Southwestern Association of Naturalists , the Society for the Study of Amphibians and Reptiles, and the Societas Europaea Herpetologica .

According to Campbell, the species Bothrocophias campbelli ( Freire-Lascano, 1991 ), Abronia campbelli E.D. Brodie, Jr. & Savage, 1993 , Bothrops jonathani Harvey, 1994 , Incilius campbelli ( Mendelson, 1994 ), Craugastor campbelli ( EN Smith, 2005 ) and Anolis campbelli ( Koehler & EN Smith, 2008 ). In 2012 Campbell was honored with the Fitch Award .
