Jonathan Charney
Jonathan I. Charney (born 1943 in New York City , † September 7, 2002 in Nashville , Tennessee ) was an American lawyer and professor at Vanderbilt University .
Life
Charney received his university education at New York University , where he was awarded a Bachelor of Arts in 1965 . This was followed by a doctorate at the University of Wisconsin, which he successfully completed in 1968. During this time he was, among other things, an employee of the University's Law Review . After completing his training, he first worked for the United States Department of Justice . As a staff member and department head in the Renewable Energy Department , under Richard Nixon, he was instrumental in drawing up the United States' positions at the Conference on the Law of the Sea . Charney attended this conference as a member of the American delegation. In 1972 he moved to Vanderbilt University as a lecturer. There he was offered a professorship in 1978 . The focus of his work was international law . In 1998 he gave a lecture at the Hague Academy for International Law . In addition to his academic work, he advised the governments of various states on questions of international law. He was married and had three children.
Memberships and honors
Charney was a member of the American Law Institute and the Council on Foreign Relations , among others . He was also involved in the American Bar Association and was a member of the International Law Association . In addition, he was co-editor of numerous specialist journals. Between 1998 and 2002, Charney also held the position of Editor-in-Chief of the American Journal of International Law . He was a member of the Order of the Coif .
