Jonathon Riley CB , DSO (born January 16, 1955 in Yorkshire ) is a historian and retired Lieutenant-General in the British Army . He was General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Multi-National Division (South-East) in Iraq and Deputy Commander of ISAF .

Life

Riley attended St. Mary's School in Beverley and Kingston Grammar School in London. He then studied geomorphology at University College London and history at the University of Leeds (Masters). A Ph.D. in Modern History from Cranfield University . In 1973 he joined the British Army and served in the Royal Welch Fusiliers Infantry Regiment . The officer was deployed abroad in Bosnia, Northern Ireland, Sierra Leone, Iraq and Afghanistan. In 2005 he was a Senior British Military Adviser at the United States Central Command . He taught u. a. at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst , Cranfield University and King's College London . Riley is Chairman of the Royal Welch Fusiliers Museum and Trustee of the Royal United Services Institute .
