Ikonen began his international career in the Continental Cup . He competed in his first competition on January 24, 2004 in Braunlage, Lower Saxony . He reached the 28th place on the normal hill. In the Junior World Championship 2004 in Norway Stryn he could reach the sixth place together with Ville Pekka Timonen, Tommi Voutilainen and Olli Pekkala in the team competition. In the individual on the normal hill Ikonen only came in 35th place. In the following season he was able to achieve the best individual result in the Continental Cup with a 4th place at the COC jumping in Rovaniemi . On March 9, 2005, he was used for the first time in the national group at the World Cup jumping in Kuopio and was able to collect his first World Cup points here with 25th place on the large hill. At the Junior World Championships in Rovaniemi, which took place two weeks later, he surprisingly won gold on the normal hill and achieved the bronze medal with the team in team competition. After jumping in the Continental Cup over the summer, he was accepted into the World Cup team on November 26, 2005. In the 2005/06 World Cup season he achieved a place in the points in most jumping competitions and even reached the top 10 several times. His best result was a 7th place on January 22, 2006 in Sapporo . At the end of the season he was in 30th place overall. It was the only World Cup season so far for icons that has since started again in the Continental Cup and the FIS Cup . At the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin he was in the squad for the Finnish team, but was not used in either individual or team competition.
After a two-year absence from international competitions Ikonen started on December 7th and 8th, 2010 at his last two ski jumping competitions in Rovaniemi as part of the Continental Cup, in which he was 52nd and 62nd. He then finally ended his career.
