The Jordaniidae are a species of fish family from the group of bull relatives that occurs in the eastern north Pacific from Baranof Island in southeast Alaska to southern California .

Only two genera, each with one species, are placed in the family:

features

The species of the Jordaniidae reach body lengths of a maximum of 15 or 20 cm. Compared to the bullheads , the body is elongated in relation to body height and width, the anal fin is also longer when it is put in relation to body length. The two dorsal fins are clearly separated. The ventral fins, which lie far forward, are supported by five fin rays. The gills are reduced. The caudal fin is rounded or spade-shaped. A diagnostic feature of the family is the presence of the first pharyngobranchial, which is the topmost bone of the first branchial arch .

Fin formulas :

  • Jordania zonope : dorsal XVII – XIIX / 15–17, anal 22–24.
  • Paricelinus hopliticus : dorsal XII – XIII / 19, anal 23.

Both species live near the coast over rocky sea beds and between kelp .
