Jorge Alberto Manrique

Jorge Alberto Manrique Castañeda (born July 17, 1936 in Azcapotzalco ; † November 2, 2016 ) was a Mexican art historian and critic .

biography

Manrique studied from 1955 to 1959 at the Faculty of Philosophy and Humanities of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) and received his doctorate in history in 1962.

By then he had been professor at the Faculty of Philosophy and Humanities at the Universidad Veracruzana since 1959, and from 1962 also director of the faculty. During this time from 1959 to 1962 he also conducted research at the Seminario de Historia de la Revolución of the Universidad Veracruzana, where he also held the position of director from 1961 to 1962. In the years from 1962 to 1965, postgraduate courses in cultural and art history followed at the universities in Paris and Rome , including under Victor Lucián Tapié and Giulio Carlo Argan . From 1965 he was a professor at the Faculty of Philosophy and Humanities at UNAM, and since 1968 he has also conducted research at the Research Institute for Aesthetics there , the Instituto de Investigaciones Estéticas .

From 1970 he also conducted research at the Center for Historical Studies ( Centro de Estudios Históricos ) of the Colegio de México and was visiting professor at various institutions. In 1974 he was appointed head of the Instituto de Investigaciones Estéticas by the Council of the Mexican Government and held this position until 1980. In the meantime, he also obtained a doctorate in art history at UNAM in 1975 . From 1982 to 1983 he was the founding director of the National Art Museum and from 1987 to 1988 director of the Museum of Modern Art , both museums of the Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes y Literatura (INBAL). From 2000 he received the title "Investigador Emérito" ( Emeritus Researcher ) of the Instituto de Investigaciones Estéticas.

Manrique has published numerous books and professional articles in numerous American and European countries.

Memberships

He was a member of the Sistema Nacional de Investigadores , the Academia de Artes , full member ( Miembro de número ) and secretary of the Academia Mexicana de la Historia , Miembro de número of the Committee for Memorials of the Mexican ICOMOS Section (there also President from 1979 to 1987 ), Honorary member of the Comité International d'Histoire de l'Art (CIHA), member of the Comité Mexicano de Historia del Arte (CMHA) and the Mexican sections of the International Committee for Museums and the Association Internationale des Critiques d'Art .
