Jorge Camacho (painter)

Jorge R. Camacho Lazo (born January 5, 1934 in Havana , † March 30, 2011 in Paris ) was a Cuban painter of surrealism .

life and work

At the end of the 1940s, Camacho encountered surrealism through his friendship with the poet Carlos M. Luis . He dealt with Klee , Miró , Tanguy and de Chirico . In 1952 he broke off his studies in order to devote himself entirely to painting. One of his supporters in Havana was René Portocarrero , and he was particularly impressed by an exhibition by Wifredo Lams in 1955. In 1959 he traveled to Mexico for a year, where he met Rufino Tamayo and Carlos Mérida and became friends with the painter, graphic artist and sculptor José Luis Cuevas closed. The two artists also studied extensively the Mayan culture . In 1959 Camacho went to Paris, where he met André Breton in 1961 , and he joined his circle. In addition to being a painter and draftsman, he was also active as a sculptor, poet, photographer and esotericist in exile in Paris. He was inspired to exhibit his works by Daniel Cordier , Oskar Panizza , Raymond Roussel and Matthias Fels , among others .
